Men’s Lacrosse played one of the toughest schedules of any Division III team in the country during the 2008 season. The Poets started out on a hot streak, winning six of their first seven games, including three NCAA wins. The only defeat in that stretch was a narrow loss to #8 Ithaca College. A four-game skid ensued, during which the injury bug caught up with the Poets.
The season started with a bang, as the Poets beat West Coast rival, Division II Notre Dame de Namur. They then went on to rattle off wins against National Club powerhouse Brigham Young, Division II Grand Canyon, and club teams Loyola Marymount and Claremont. After the loss to Ithaca, the Poets traveled to San Diego and beat Drew on a neutral field.
They then traveled to the East Coast for a four game road trip on Spring Break. It was here the injuries caught up with them. Already playing without senior captain Dan Aas, and with goalie Ben Brown battling knee problems, another senior captain Todd Drotleff went down with a back injury, ending his season just two games into the trip. They lost to Goucher, then #16 Roanoke and #4 Lynchburg before bouncing back to beat Marymount in the final game on the East Coast.
A number of Poets had stellar seasons including Junior midfielder Anthony Lackey who finished with 43 points (24g, 19a) in NCAA competition. He had 36 goals and 26 assists total. Senior attackman Kevin McCarroll finished with 16 goals and ten assists on the year. Junior goalie Ben Brown had a .553 save percentage in NCAA play, making 119 saves.
