The Cougars start the regular season next weekend against the University of Minnesota while Denver takes on the University of North Carolina and the Air Force Academy competes against the University of Maryland.
The scrimmages started with BYU facing Denver, a rematch from the fall when Denver traveled out to Utah. BYU went up early when Elliot Grow scored 2 quick goals and added an assist to put the Cougars up 3-0 early in the first quarter.
The Pioneers fought back to tie it at 3 before Drew Shumway (2G) scored late in the 1st quarter to give BYU a 4-3 lead. It was back and forth in the 2nd quarter as both teams traded goals before the Pioneers scored 3 in a row to break open a 6-6 game with 5 minutes to go in the half including Jamie Lincoln’s first of four on the day to give the home team a 9-6 halftime advantage
The Cougars could never get closer than 3 goals the rest of the way, closing the gap several times in the 3rd to 3 points at 10-7 and 12-9 before Denver went on a 5 goal run at the end of the 3rd and start of the 4th quarters. BYU scored a few late to bring the score to 17-11 before Denver put one in with 2 minutes to go for the final score of 18-11.
The Cougars next game of the day was against the Falcons from Air Force who were fresh off a loss to DU as well (13-7). This game was much slower paced than the run and gun of the first with Air Force’s lone goal in the first quarter giving them a 1-0 lead after one. The Falcons scored another early in the 2nd quarter to give them a 2-0 lead before the Cougars went on a 4 goal run that extended into the 3rd quarter. With BYU up 4-2 in the 3rd, Air Force blanked BYU the rest of the period while putting in 2of their own to tie it up at 4 heading into the final frame.
BYU would not be denied though as they went on a 3 goal run to start the 4th. Mark Manning who had 3 goals and 6 assists on the day added an assist and a goal in the run. The highlight for the Cougars on the day came when LSM Brit Cone (1A) created a turnover and gave the Cougars a 3 goal lead on a beautiful feed to defensive middie Tyson Poole (1G). Air Force would score 2 more goals to bring the final score to 7-6 for the Cougars.
Notes: BYU won only 13 of 50 face offs on the day, BYU held DU to 29 of 40 clearing and AFA to 28-34, BYU was only successful on 2 of 10 extra man opportunities while holding the opposition to 3 of 7 on the day, This is the second year in a row BYU has defeated a D1 team during a scrimmage after last years 12-9 win over VMI, The Cougars were missing 3 starters on the day, (Attackman Hier and Defensemen Arias and Crawforth) all of which are probable for the Cougars regular season opener next weekend, The Cougars start the regular season next weekend against the University of Minnesota while Denver takes on the University of North Carolina and the Air Force Academy competes against the University of Maryland.
