The Whittier College men’s lacrosse team scored 10 goals in the second half as it ran away with a 16-5 win over the University of Southern Maine on cold Wednesday evening at Memorial Stadium.
The Poets (2-0) held a 6-3 advantage at the intermission and outscored the Huskies 10-2 in the second half en route to the 11-goal win.
Ben Brown shinned in the goal for the Poets as he finished the game with 12 saves in over 58 minutes of work.
Offensively Sam Russell fired home a game-high four goals. Charles Fisher tallied a game-high five points as he registered two goals and had three assists.
The purple and gold saw nine other players recorded at least one point. Matt Mulry (2g, 1a) and Christian Wright (2g, 1a) each finished the game with three-point evenings.
Whittier outshot the Huskies 51-27 and corralled 22 more groundballs than USM, 48-26. WC was also successful on 24-of-27 clears.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, February 21, as they travel to Belmont, Calif., to face Notre Dame de Namur University at 1:00 p.m.
