The Wildcats got off to a hot start, winning their first three games in impressive fashion. Then after a loss, the Cats won three more in a row.
But the Falcons? Not so hot.
Saratoga lost three straight to St. Francis, Aptos and Watsonville. Then after a win, the Falcons lost again before finally putting together back-to-back victories.
So the Cats were riding high on a three-game winning streak and sporting a 6-1 season record heading into a game against Saratoga last Friday night at Benny Pierce Field.
Now, though, it’s the Falcons who are enjoying a three-game winning streak.
Saratoga turned back Los Gatos in a 6-4 thriller on March 26 on the ‘Toga home field, and the Falcons have turned their season around, evening their overall record at 4-4 while enjoying a 2-1 mark in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The loss dropped Gatos to 2-2 in division play.
Andrew Lee tossed in three goals and handed out two assists to lead the Falcons to the win over the Wildcats. Two of Lee’s goals came in the first half when Saratoga jumped out to a 3-2 lead before intermission. Chance Cox also scored a first-half goal off an assist from Rick Wilson in the half.
Lee scored again to open the second half and assisted Trevor Comes on another to help the Falcons jump out to a 5-3 lead. Wade Troyer’s goal to open the fourth quarter closed out the scoring for the Falcons, but it was enough for the win, thanks to 19 saves in the goal by Gavin Peake and the defense of Alex Polcyn, Marcus Hoffman, Chris Borgia and Roman Balogh.
Eric VanNoorden, Pablo Parker, Adam Oreglia and Danny Baldwin were also singled out for outstanding efforts for the Falcons.
Steven Koch, Cameron Smith, Steven Weinschenk and Brandon Labe each scored for the Wildcats in the game.
The Wildcats had lost 9-7 to Menlo to open league play, but beat Mountain View 8-5 and Burlingame 11-6 in league games and a Palo Alto 6-4 in a non-league game over the past couple of weeks.
Los Gatos will try to get back on the winning track in a couple non-league games this week. The Cats visit St. Francis on March 30, 7 p.m., and head to Gunn on April 1, 4 p.m.
