MCLA Men’s Lacrosse: Cal State Fullerton Middie Chris Cole (Fr., Foothill H.S., CA) Is Selected As MCLA Division II Rookie Of The Year

MCLA Division II Rookie of the Year – Chris Cole, Cal State Fullerton

Fullerton is still trying to break into the top level of Division II, but with young players like Cole things are looking good for the Titans. The frosh finished with 54 goals and 40 assists out of the midfield, leading CSF to a 12-5 record and a berth in the national tournament. Were the numbers inflated? Cole recorded six goals and three assists in the two SLC tourney games to lift the Titans to the title. He also had a pair of goals against both Utah Valley and D-I Southern Cal during the regular season. That’s performing at crunch-time.

CIF-San Diego High School Girls Lacrosse: Torrey Pines Girls Lacrosse (19-3) Won First-Ever CIF Lacrosse Championship

The Falcons victory over Coronado in the CIF San Diego final vaulted them over several other premier teams to No. 2 in the Western U.S. in the season end computer rankings by LaxPower.Com. Torrey Pines finished only two-tenths of a point behind No. 1 Danville Monte Vista, the undfeated CIF Northern California champs, and ahead of other well-known Western teams like Cherry Creek (Colorado) and St Ignatius (San Francisco).

Torrey Pines won its first ever CIF championship in girls lacrosse, downing Coronado 9-8 in a hotly contested game at Rancho Bernardo Stadium. Junior middie Katie Trees scored the winning goal with only 1:50 left to play, after Coronado had come charging back from three goals down to tie the game. Trees (who finished with four goals) was one of several individual heroes for the Falcons. Caroline Boucher also netted four, and keeper Carrie Yang came up big again, finishing the game with 16 saves, many of them in the closing moments as Coronado tried to grab the lead.

The game lived up to its lofty billing, a match-up of the district’s top teams and two of the best in the Western US. No. 1 ranked Torrey and No. 2 ranked Coronado were clearly the class of San Diego girls lacrosse this year, and everyone expected a close, emotional and physical game. And that’s exactly what it was, flashes of great team play and dazzling individual effort, huge momentum swings and last-minute heroics.
