championship tournament last season. BYU has won three of the last four meetings against the Clansmen. Last year the Cougars beat Simon Fraser in British Columbia 15-9.

The two teams will face off following a successful BYU road sweep of three games last weekend in California. Senior captain Brian Mathay said the team hopes to carry the weekend confidence into the game Saturday.

“The offense really clicked over the weekend and we’ll take what we can from last weekend and apply it to this game,” Mathay said.  ”We’ll have the confidence and ability to get through the challenges that we’re going to face [on Saturday] because it’s going to be a challenging game.”

The Cougars will face a unique style of lacrosse from the Canadian team.

San Diego High School Lacrosse: La Costa Canyon Boys Lacrosse Opens 2011 Season At San Marcos On March 8 And Is Favored To Repeat As CIF-San Diego Champions

Though La Costa Canyon has a new head coach, it is still the favorite to repeat as CIF-San Diego Section champions in 2011. And many coaches around the state say the Mavericks are the best team in California. La Costa Canyon shouldn’t see any drop off with long-time assistant Jesse Foss replacing Dallas Hartley, who have moved on to take over the head coaching position at Chapman University. La Costa Canyon was undefeated last season and finished ranked No. 2 in the West. In an effort to keep his team on its toes, Foss has scheduled out-of-conference games with top teams throughout California, as well as in Colorado and New York.

Success will hinge on the play of a strong group of returning players, including All-American goalie Eric Sanschagrin, who will play collegiately at Princeton, defenseman Michael Riis, who was ranked the No. 8 senior in the West and has committed to Denver, and middie Blaine Wetherald.

MCLA Div II Lacrosse: Saint Mary’s Men’s Lacrosse (6-2) Defeated Gonzaga 12-8 On Feb 19 As Team Seeks To Repeat As WCLL Champions

The #23 ranked Gaels entered the Saturday afternoon match-up riding a three-game winning streak, with the last two wins outscoring University of Pacific and UC Merced 42-1, but they knew this game would be a lot closer as the Saint Mary’s-Gonzaga rivalry was in full effect.

“We were really pumped up to play Gonzaga, everyone was excited to come out and play physical,” as Senior Midfielder Jim Castilone said.

Castilone led the Gaels (5-2) with four goals and played a major role in an exciting second-half comeback as the Gaels pulled out a 12-8 victory over the Zags.

This four-game winning streak gives the Gaels momentum into the heart of their schedule as they have high expectations to repeat as WCLL Champions. Next, the Gaels travel to Redding to take on Southern Oregon University on Saturday February 28, with the next home game scheduled for Sunday, March 13 at noon against #13 Cal-State Fullerton.
