Northern California High School Lacrosse: Menlo School Girls Lacrosse (9-4) Loses Wild Double-Overtime Game 17-16 To Rival St. Ignatius On April 12

The Menlo School girls’ lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead, gave up nine straight goals, battled its way into double overtime but still dropped a 17-16 nonleague decision to visiting St. Ignatius on Tuesday.

The loss marked the 12th straight year that Menlo coach Jen Lee has lost to the Wildcats. “Menlo came closer than ever, really and truly, to earn a regulation win against its local and legitimate nemesis — St. Ignatius,” Lee said.

Menlo (9-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four straight goals by sophomore middie Ali Kim. The Wildcats, however, then scored nine unanswered goals to grab a 9-5 halftime lead. Menlo trailed by 11-5 with 18:07 left to play before launching a comeback with six straight goals in the span of 8:28 to tie SI at 11 with 8:03 left to play.

Menlo took a 13-12 lead on goals by Kacie Madeira and Michaela Michael, but SI forced overtime with a goal with just 14 seconds left. After SI took a 16-15 lead in the first overtime, Menlo’s Savannah McKinnon raced up the middle, was fouled and passed to junior Sophie Sheeline, who scored to make it 16-16 with just 10 seconds left to play. After taking a break before the second “sudden-victory” overtime, SI finally scored to end the marathon match.
