Major League Lacrosse: MLL Championship Weekend Semifinal Games Are Set On Aug 27 With #1 Boston Cannons Vs Chesapeake Bayhawks And #2 Denver Outlaws Vs Hamilton Nationals

After an exciting final week of the regular season, the four-team field has been set for the 2011 Sports Authority Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend, which will be held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on August 27 and 28.

By means of their 9-3 regular season record, the Boston Cannons have secured the top overall seed and will face the fourth-seeded and defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks in the first semi-final at 12 p.m. In the second semi-final, the second-seeded Denver Outlaws will play the Hamilton Nationals, who hold the third seed in this year’s MLL Championship Weekend.

Led by midfielder Paul Rabil, the Cannons will enter the postseason with a three-game winning streak after earning a 16-15 overtime victory over the Nationals on Saturday night at Harvard Stadium. Rabil, who finished the season as the league’s leading scorer with 50 points, scored three goals, including a two-point goal, with two assists in the victory on Saturday night. Meanwhile, midfielder Brad Ross gave Boston the win when he scored just 27 seconds into the extra session.

The Cannons, who have never won a MLL title, will be the top seed for the second straight season. They dropped a 13-9 decision against the Bayhawks in last year’s semi-final matchup.

With a 15-9 victory over the Bayhawks on Saturday night, the Outlaws finished the regular season with back-to-back victories to earn their sixth straight winning season. Attackman Brendan Mundorf, who finished the season ranked third in the MLL with 45 points, tallied five goals with three assists as the Outlaws sprinted out to a commanding 13-1 lead to avenge an earlier season loss to the Bayhawks at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Major League Lacrosse: Denver Outlaws Never Trail In 15-9 Victory Over Chesapeake Bayhawks In Final Regular Season Game On Aug 13

The Outlaws clicked in all phases of the game early, using an 11-0 first-half run to jump in front and never looked back, coasting to a 15-9 victory over Chesapeake in the final game of the regular season.

With the win, Denver finishes the regular season with a 7-5 record – the team’s sixth winning season in its six-year history. Boston is the only other MLL franchise to have more than five winning seasons in its history with seven winning seasons in its 11 years in the league.

Brendan Mundorf kicked off the scoring at the 2:19 mark with his 26th tally of the season.

Kyle Dixon answered to tie the game 1-1 just over one minute later, before the Outlaws took over.

Mundorf netted his second of the contest, Brian Langtry scored on a man-up opportunity and Terry Kimener added a goal to put the Outlaws in front 4-1 after one quarter of play.

Denver dominated the second quarter to the tune of an 8-0 margin in the period, including an astounding seven goals in a span of just 3:58.

Mundorf started the stanza off with a shorthanded tally – his league leading third shorthanded goal of the year.

Mundorf would add two more markers and an assist in the quarter, giving him five goals and two assists before the intermission.

Drew Westervelt, Sean DeLaney, Jarett Park, Peet Poillon and Billy Bitter each added scores in the period, pushing the Outlaws to a 12-1 halftime advantage.

Jesse Schwartzman held the Bayhawks scoreless for a stretch of 26:44 to end the first half, saving 9-of-11 (.818) shots on goal.
