Major League Lacrosse: Boston Cannons Win Franchise’s First MLL Championship Ending Nine Years Of Frustration

The Boston Cannons were the only original franchise still active to have not won an MLL crown. The Cannons had multiple regular season titles to their credit and were a perennial championship contender, but owned a dismal 1-8 record in nine previous postseason appearances.

That history of playoff futility has weighed like a monkey on the collective backs of Boston’s coaches and players. So it was understandable to see the unbridled happiness the Cannons displayed when that burden was at long last lifted.

Sharp-shooting attackman Matt Poskay scored three goals as top-seeded Boston edged No. 3 Hamilton, 10-9, in the Major League Lacrosse final yesterday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Veteran attackman Ryan Boyle added a goal and three assists for the Cannons, who stayed on the field celebrating for almost an hour after the final whistle.

“The core of this team has been together for three years. We have fought for this for so long so to finally get it done is an amazing feeling,” Belisle said. “We have put in so much time and effort and every player has made so many sacrifices. It just feels so good to achieve the ultimate goal.”
