Lacrosse Tournaments: The “2012 Sand Storm Lacrosse Tournament” On Jan 14-15 Will Bring 3,000 Players And 4,500 Spectators To Palm Springs
“This group is very important to the destination, as it generates an estimated $4 (million) to $5 million in direct spending and brings awareness that our destination is perfect for amateur sports and families,” said Scott White, president and CEO of Palm Springs Desert Resort Communities CVA — the tourism bureau that represents the entire valley.
Record attendance is expected at this weekend’s Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival at Empire Polo Club in Indio.
Cory Samaras Griffeth, tournament director for Maryland-based Synapse Sports, said Sand Storm 2012 hit capacity and closed early registration a month before this weekend’s two-day event.
“We’re expecting about 3,000 athletes and 4,500 spectators,” Griffeth said. Expected are 130 teams — 85 for girls and 45 for boys.
“It’s been quite amazing,” she said. “Last year, we had 78 teams.”
Athletes, parents and fans are coming from the East Coast, Midwest, the West and Canada.
That’s spurred estimates by hospitality officials that the tournament will generate more than 2,000 room-night bookings across about 10 valleywide hotels.
“We’re sold out because of the event,” said Gerri Lynch, director of sales at Embassy Suites La Quinta Hotel & Spa. “Saturday sold out six weeks ago. For Friday, there are only seven rooms left.”
La Quinta Resort & Club reported it was booked, in part, because of the lacrosse tournament.
