MCLA Lacrosse: BYU Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Arizona State 14-10 On March 30

The BYU Men’s Lacrosse team (11-1, 1-0) defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils (8-5, 2-0) in a hard-fought win Friday night in Provo.

The game was the two teams’ first meeting since May 2011 when BYU overcame a four-point deficit to beat ASU in the MCLA Division 1 National Championship title game in Denver.

The game began with freshman middie Andrew Bertha scoring for BYU. Senior attack Corey Gunderson also scored for the Cougars, ending the first quarter of play with BYU up 2-0.

After almost six minutes into the second quarter, ASU scored their first goal of the game, to which Gunderson responded with another BYU goal. The teams continued to rally the score, tying the game at 3-3 then 4-4. BYU went into the half up 5-4.

The third quarter continued along the same pattern, with ASU leading 8-7 at one point. However, BYU was up 9-8 beginning the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter allowed for BYU to score five goals while ASU scored two, leaving the Cougars with a final score of 14-10 and a victory over the Sun Devils.

“This was exactly what we expected against Arizona State,” said BYU Head Coach Matt Schneck. “Throughout the season, they’ve been holding teams to really low scores – five or six goals a game – so we’re really pleased that we were able score as much as we did against their defense and the best goalie in the country. This was a good test for our guys to go up against an extremely tough team like this and come out victorious.”

Arizona State Head Coach Chris Malone said he was proud of the way the Sun Devils played against BYU.

“I saw a lot of good things from our team defensively and offensively,” Malone said. “Unfortunately it took them six or seven minutes to realize that we can hang with these guys [BYU], and then they started making plays. I’ll give credit to BYU; they left it on the field and wouldn’t give up, they kept fighting.”

With the win over ASU, the Cougars improve their record to 11-1 for the season. The team looks forward to traveling to Colorado this weekend to face conference rivals University of Colorado and Colorado State University.
