NCAA Lacrosse: “Battle At The Big House” On April 14 Features Inaugural Match-Up Between Michigan Men’s Lacrosse And Ohio State
Buckeye Notes to Know • The Buckeyes are seventh in the NCAA in team defense, holding opponents to 7.64 goals an outing. • Junior Logan Schuss leads the Buckeyes with 31 goals, 12 assists and 43 points this season and enters the Michigan game on a 41-game point streak. He is in the Top 14 in the NCAA in points and goals per game and is third among all active players in career points per game (3.68). • Buckeye goalie Greg Dutton is in the Top 12 in the NCAA in goals-against average and save percentage. He has 10+ saves in four of his last five outings. • Ohio State is playing back-to-back doubleheaders in Big Ten football stadiums, facing Michigan after the Wolverines’ spring game and kicking off a doubleheader with the Buckeye football team’s spring game next week. • The game Saturday is the first between Ohio State and Michigan as varsity programs. It is part of the Creator’s Trophy competition between OSU, UM and Penn State. • Ohio State’s next two games both will be televised by BTN. The Buckeyes were part of the first live men’s lacrosse broadcast on the network in 2010. • Defender Matt Kawamoto is a Top 10 finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, the only ECAC player on the list. A Look at Michigan Michigan is in its first year a varsity program, the first BCS conference school to add men’s lacrosse since Notre Dame added the sport in 1980 and started competition in 1981. The squad’s club program began in 1940 and was halted before World War II but was restarted in 1965 and continued on ever since.
The Wolverines are 1-10 this year, with their first varsity win coming at Mercer, 14-4, March 4. The squad is averaging 8.0 goals a game and allowing 12.64 per contest. The team is in the Top 20 nationally with a 31.1 shooting percentage and averages 25.7 shots a game while allowing 36.4.
Thomas Paras is first on the team with 22 points, ranking second with 15 goals. Trevor Yealy has a team-best 20 goals and is second with 21 points. Will Meter is first in assists with 12, followed by Willie Steenland with 11. Brian Greiner has won 98-of-227 faceoffs for the Wolverines and is first with 36 groundballs, followed by J.D. Johnson with 35. Two goalies have split the majority of minutes in the cage. Emil Weiss is 1-6, with an 11.00 goals-against average and .513 save percentage. Dylan Westerhold is 0-4, with a 15.02 gaa and .354 svpct.
