Lacrosse In The World: Former Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Captain David Earl Leads Group To Assist Orphanage In Honduras On Behalf Of NLL’s Minnesota Swarm And Summit Orthopedics (Video)
The Minnesota Swarm teamed up with Summit Orthopedics to bring lacrosse to an orphanage in Honduras Sept. 3-7, 2013, and sent current Swarm player and former Notre Dame lacrosse captain David Earl alongside several Summit surgeons.
Earl led lacrosse sessions during physical education classes on the orphanage, and in total, worked with over 300 kids during his five-day.
The Swarm donated sticks, nets, gear and equipment to the orphanage so that they are able to play lacrosse year-round moving forward. Kids were able to learn how to shoot, pass, play goalie, and scoop up a loose balls from a pro lacrosse player.
Earl worked closely with the folks at Summit Orthopedics during his stay, including Dr. Peter Daly of St. Paul, who is also a Notre Dame alum, and Swarm athletic trainer Dan Sonday. Dr. Daly is the founder of the Holy Family Surgery Center on the orphanage and he helped conduct over 270 consultations and 50 surgeries during his weeklong trip.
Four games into the year, the Lizards added 2012 No. 1 overall draft pick Rob Pannell to their roster. Pannell made an immediate impact for the Lizards and finished the season with a team-leading 42 points and led the League in points-per-game with 4.2, earning Cascade Rookie of the Year honors.
Max Seibald, the team’s leading scorer in 2012 with 39 points, finished with just 9 in 2013 after missing a considerable amount of time with a broken left foot. Other than Pannell, the only other Lizard to crack the 20-point barrier was Tommy Palasek.
Drew Adams played in all 14 games, making the most saves of any goalie in the league (209) and posting a very respectable .549 save percentage.
Greg Gurenlian, was absolutely dominant when he was out on the field, battling for the ball and securing 232 faceoff wins for his team. He now holds the title of highest single season win percentage at .640.
Kip Turner was the backbone of the Bayhawks in their quest for back-to-back MLL Championships. Kip finished 2013 with 8 regular season wins, a 10.35 GAA and a .571 SV% to boot. He dominated in the post-season with a 10.00 GAA and a .583 SV% saving 28 of the 58 shots he faced,
