“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: San Diego-Based “Pacific Falcons” Win The Middle School Girls “Coachella” Division Championship

2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival Middle School Girls Champions: PACIFIC FALCONS

High-scoring attacker Devon Doheny was almost unstoppable in leading the Pacific Falcons to the Middle School division championship. Attackers Taylor Jervis and Cici Ricci were also responsible for a bunch of goals and assists as the Falcons posted a 5-0 record and soundly defeated BearLax Green, 9-2, in the title tilt.

Genesis Lucero and Amanda Marks were the key figures in midfield, helping the Falcons control possession with strong work on the draws and ground balls as well as in the clearing game. Alex Rasmussen was highlighted by the coaching staff for her nonstop hustle and leadership. Natalie Yorba and Sami Herrick anchored a dominating defense that helped Pacific outscore its four pool play opponents, 62-14.

Joe Brown is the director of the Pacific Falcons program, which draws from the greater San Diego region and has players from such towns as Poway, Carmel Valley, Encinitas, Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad and Carmel.  “The reason our team performs so well is that we are, first and foremost, a true team. Our players make the right pass and get the ball to the open girl no matter who it is,” Brown said. “The players are the focus of our program at all levels. We are not in the business of lacrosse, but rather handle the business side so as to provide maximum opportunities for these dedicated players. We are in the club game for the right reasons and always place kids first.”

“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: Anchors & Crowns Lacrosse Club (Newport Beach, CA) Captured Inaugural Varsity Boys Lacrosse Division Championship

2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival Varsity Boys Champions: ANCHORS & CROWNS

Anchors & Crowns Lacrosse Club, a compilation of players from the two rival high schools in the Newport Beach area – Corono del Mar HS and Newport Harbor HS – compiled a 5-0 record to capture the Varsity Division of the inaugural boys’ tournament at Sand Storm.  Junior goalie Michael Ortlieb (Corono del Mar) was named tournament Most Valuable Player after making 11 saves to lead Anchors & Crowns to a 9-4 victory over northern California entry Team Cadillax  in the championship game.   Sophomore attackman Jack Ortlieb (Corono del Mar) and junior attackman Riley Robinson (Newport Harbor) were the top goal scorers for Anchors & Crowns while junior midfielder Michael Keasey (Corono del Mar) was a force between the lines. A stout defense was led by Drexel-bound senior Donald Dalton (Corono del Mar) and junior Andrew Wilson (Newport Harbor).

“Many of these kids grew up playing youth lacrosse together so teamwork and togetherness come naturally despite the high school rivalry,” Anchors & Crowns head coach G.W. Mix said. “We received outstanding play from our defense and goalie throughout the tournament.”

“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: Colorado’s “TEAM 180 2012” Captured The High School Girls “Palm Springs” Division Championship With Top Players Committed To Attending Duke, Johns Hopkins, Navy And Penn State

2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival High School Girls “Palm Springs” Division Champion: TEAM 180

Midfielder Emma Lazaroff showed tremendous leadership and was a force in all areas of the game en route to earning All-Tournament honors and leading Team 180 2012 to the Palm Springs Division crown. Lazaroff, who plays at Fairfield High in Colorado and has committed to Duke University, was an offensive quarterback and did a superb job of spreading the ball around to teammates.

Division I-bound goalkeepers Emi Smith (Regis High, Penn State) and Cassidy Chaney (Cherry Creek, Navy) were the backbones of a stingy defense. They got great support from line defenders Molly Erdle (Mullen) and Tate Crosby (Cheyenne Mountain).  Lightning-fast midfielder Madison Khanna (Johns Hopkins) led the transition game while twin attackers Bryn and Maura Bandt-Law (Cherry Creek) combined to score a slew of goals as Team 180 went 5-0 and beat XTEAM, 6-3, in the championship.

“This group of girls has played together for years. They instinctively know where one another is on the field and move the ball effortlessly,” Team 180 head coach Sam Bartron said.

“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: Colorado-Based “TEAM 180 2013” Captured The High School Girls “Rancho Mirage” Division Championship

2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival High School Girls Rancho Mirage Division Champions: TEAM 180 2013

Attacker Catherine Ellis was a scoring machine while midfielder Caroline Schlegel was a force on draws and ground balls in leading Team 180 2013 to the Rancho Mirage division title. Ellis displayed an aggressive attitude and rocket shot in piling up the goals throughout the tournament. Schlegel, her teammate at Kent Denver High, was instrumental in helping Team 180 control possession while compiling a 6-0 record and shutting out Gold Coast, 5-0, in the final.

Speedy attacker Erin Sungelo routinely created offense for teammates while midfielders Kathryn Blumhardt and Erin Schilmoeller were also responsible for clearing the ball and producing a lot of points. All three players attend Regis Jesuit High in Aurora, Col. Tori Link and Stephanie Guerra provided strong play on the defensive side of the ball, routinely marking out opponent’s top scoring threats.

“This team did an outstanding job of controlling the flow of the game with strong offense,” Bartron said. “I don’t think they gave up more than a couple goals in any of the five games they played and that’s because the other team’s never had the ball.”

“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: The “La Quinta Division” High School Girls Lacrosse Champion Was “XTEAM 2012” With Top Players From California, Canada, Georgia And Texas

LA QUINTA DIVISION WINNER: X-TEAM 2012

Georgia attacker Annie Ruland was an offensive firepower, named to the All-Tournament team after leading XTEAM 2012 to the La Quinta Division  championship. Midfielder Drew Jackson, another Georgia resident, displayed superior speed and power in the midfield for XTEAM, which went 6-0 in the tourney and defeated Team 180, 7-2, in the final.

Texas native Fran Sartori anchored a suffocating defense while California standout Regan Anderson played both ends of the field and keyed the transition game. Washington product Tyler Sherper was a true spitfire and motivated the entire team with her pre-game speeches. Canadian goalie Natasha Whitman was impenetrable in all six games and showed the skills she learned from competing against boys back home.

“This team loves each other on and off the field. Because they don’t practice with each other except for a few days before tournaments, they rely on their emotional connection to their teammates,” said XTEAM head coach and former James Madison All-American Jessica (Beard) Thornton. XTEAM is comprised of talented players from all over the country who want to play lacrosse in college, but only play together 6 times a year. “This is exhilarating for the kids,” said club owner Crista Samaras.  “They have had a long fall of training and tournaments traveling to every place we go by plane.  This was a great way to end an amazing tournament.  With smiles on their faces, they are ready to work 10x harder heading into the summer.”

Southern California Club Lacrosse Tournaments: The “2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival” On Jan 15-16 Featured 65 Girls Lacrosse Teams In Four Divisions And 14 Boys Lacrosse Teams With Nearly 40 NCAA Div I-III College Recruiters Present

The 2011 tournament, sponsored by Gatorade and STX, featured a record 65 teams in four girls divisions. Competition was held Jan. 15-16 amidst a spectacular backdrop of palm trees and snow-capped mountains at the fabulous Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA.  Nearly 40 Division I, II and III college programs were represented at Sand Storm, including Cornell, Denver, Harvard, Loyola, Navy, Oregon, Princeton and Stanford, whose coaches were on hand to scout the myriad of talent.

“There definitely seemed to be more of a recruiting presence this year. I think the major schools are starting to realize there are some very good players at this tournament,” said Joe Brown, whose Pacific Falcons captured the Coachella Middle School Division championship. “Our girls were also extremely impressed with STX promo player, Dana Dobbie (former Maryland All American; Loyola University coach), who was very accessible through team clinics, providing a great presence as far as mentoring the younger players,” Brown added.

Since its debut in 2008, Sand Storm has continued to raise the bar and deliver a tremendous experience for all participants. Of course, winning enhances the experience and Team 180 finally broke through with two division championships after several runner-up finishes at Sand Storm.  “We really wanted this tournament. We’ve finished second too many times so this is the one we were really going after,” Bartron said. “It’s very satisfying for our program to come away with a couple titles this year because the competition has certainly gotten better.”

Team 180 showed up at the fourth annual Sand Storm Festival in full force. The Denver-based program brought four teams and almost 100 players while another 80 parents also made the trip to scenic Palm Springs.  “Sand Storm has become the favorite tournament for our girls and their families,” Team 180 director Sam Bartron said. “Obviously, the location and the weather are huge draws, but it’s also the upbeat feel of the overall event. It’s just so well-organized and downright fun.”

This year’s Sand Storm Festival broke new ground as tournament operator Synapse Sports partnered with Lax West to add a boys’ component to the event.  The boys made a successful debut with 14 teams from throughout California competing in a well-run tournament.   “It was a fantastic start and I feel very good about the future,” said Michael Watson, founder and director of Lax West. “All the feedback I heard was very positive and we already have teams committed from Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Colorado next year in addition to more teams form California.  Everyone was very impressed with the venue and the Palm Springs destination location. I see no problem with growing this event exponentially over the next couple years.”

Watson, a former 4x All-American at the University of Virginia and professional player with the Los Angeles Riptide, conducted clinics along with STX representatives Anthony Kelly (Ohio State, Rochester Rattlers) and Josh Rachman, former Bayhawks defender and U.S. Military Special Forces.  “This event combines a convenient location, spectacular venue, and the highest quality playing surface a player will ever compete on, at any level.  As the event and level of competition continue to gain momentum, Sand Storm could easily become the number one winter lacrosse destination,” said G.W. Mix, coach of boys Varsity Champs Anchors & Crowns Lacrosse Club.
