Northern California High School Girls Lacrosse: Monte Vista Girls Lacrosse Defeats California High School 14-10 In Battle Of #1 Vs. #2 In North Coast Section

montevistagirlslaz When it comes to girls lacrosse, the team that wins the draws wins the games, and that is just what happened Friday night at Monte Vista High.

Monte Vista and California battled in a hard-fought East Bay Athletic League game, but the Mustangs came out on top 14-10 because of how they played in the first six minutes.

The game pitted the Nos. 1-2 ranked teams in the North Coast Section by Laxpower.com.

In the opening minutes, Monte Vista couldn’t do anything wrong: It won every draw and had perfect control. That perfect play gave the Mustangs the advantage they needed.

“That was probably the best first half we have played all season,” Monte Vista coach Noemi Hites said. “Usually they don’t come out strong.”

The Mustangs wanted to come out strong, knowing California is always one of the tougher teams to play. Last season, Monte Vista barley squeezed by Cal in their first meeting and lost in their second, something the girls were trying to prevent.

“We came into the game really pumped up,” said Monte Vista’s Jillian Bush, who had a game-high five goals. “We really wanted the win. We didn’t want a repeat of last year.”

California coach Scott Corso was impressed.

“Their offense was really quick,” he said. “They won the draws and whoever wins the draw in girls lacrosse wins the game.”

Monte Vista took an 8-2 lead into the half before watching Cal cut the leadto 12-9.

For the Grizzlies, it was a never-quit attitude that helped them come back into the game. The Grizzlies were led by Jocelyn Algieri, who scored four goals, all in the second half.
