Denver Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Florida 19-9 In NCAA Tournament Second Round; Pioneers End 2014 Season With Record-Breaking 19 Wins

Despite four points from junior Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.), the Florida Gators were too much to overcome as the Pioneers fell 19-9 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Sunday evening. For the second-consecutive year, Florida (18-2) ended the Pioneers’ (19-2) record breaking season. Denver’s 2014 campaign saw the most wins in school history, as well as a 17-game winning streak. Last year was the previous mark for most wins in a single season at 18, as well as the previous record for the longest winning streak at 15. “I am really proud of how hard the girls played despite the changing weather conditions,” said head coach Liza Kelly. “Florida is a great team, but I don’t think the final score is indicative of the battle we had today. For our four seniors, thank you for a wonderful four years. You all have left an incredible legacy at DU.” With two assists, Remenapp climbed into sole possession of the fifth spot in NCAA career assists, passing Maggie Tamasitis’ mark of 151. Remenapp now has 153 career assists, just 11 shy of Katie Rowan’s mark of 164. Additionally, Remenapp set a new career high with six groundballs against Florida. “It was a huge team effort today,” said Remenapp. “We came out strong through the first part of the game. We showed a lot of grit today against a tough team. Even with the loss, we still accomplished a lot as a team this season.” The matchup originally scheduled for 11 a.m. MT saw multiple rain delays, causing just over six hours of a pause in action. “We had a long trip and a tough game against Jacksonville to start the tournament,” said Kelly. “To sit around and wait for the game to restart was hard for everyone, Florida included. Still, the girls came back with great attitudes and were excited to play.” After falling behind 3-0 in the first four minutes, Denver would come out strong following the first rain delay, bringing the score to 4-3 with 19:51 left in the first half. Both would exchange goals before the Gators went on a 5-0 run after the second rain delay. The Pioneers would put up three-straight goals to end the first half and start the second, cutting the UF lead to 11-7. However, the Gators would continue to challenge Denver and hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game. After securing the ball five times, junior Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) broke the DU record for most career draw controls. Boone entered the day tied with Karen Morton (2006-09) at 162. Senior Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) put up two goals for Denver, moving her into a fifth-place tie with Patience Baldwin for the most career goals in Pioneer history. Etzel and Baldwin (2001-04) both ended their DU career with 148 goals. Senior Sonorah Vinyard (Denver, Colo.) paced the Pioneers on the draw, securing the ball five times. Vinyard’s 64 draw controls on the season tied Kate Broderick’s mark set in 2005 for the second most in school history. Florida would outshoot Denver 34-23, despite the Pioneers holding a 15-11 advantage in the second half. Denver held the edge in draw controls, 15-14, while redshirt junior Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made 10 stops for DU. “We have an amazing group of girls,” said Kelly. “I think they are a true family and they showed it today with the fight they had. I’m extremely proud of everything they’ve accomplished on and off the field.” Despite a freshmen season that finished 7-11, the senior class composed of Etzel, Vinyard, Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.) and Annabelle Gilbride (Alexandria, Va.) ended a four-year career with a 56-19 record, including two appearances in the NCAA Tournament and Denver’s first MPSF Tournament Championship.
