This season will be trying for the young Skyhawks and their new coach, former Fort Lewis Lacrosse All-American Daniel Riecks, but it should be an adventure well worth it, the Sky is the limit for these Hawks. Colorado College Men’s Lacrosse Profile: Fort Lewis College Men’s Lacrosse (4-4)

Fort Lewis College’s men’s club lacrosse team, like their female counterparts, will open the home slate this weekend after playing several games on the road. The Skyhawks are set to face Regis at 10 a.m. Saturday.

FLC, which plays in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference, opened the season with a 4-4 record, with wins over New Mexico, Biola University (Calif.), Cal State-Fullerton and Cal State-Long Beach.

The club’s losses have come against stiff competition, including No. 6 Northern Colorado and No. 7 Utah Valley. The other two defeats were to Texas Tech and Northern Arizona.

The Skyhawks’ offense runs through senior attacker Eric Johnson. The team’s scoring leader also leads the RMLC in points per game with 5.40, including a 2.80 goals per game average.

“I haven’t seen a better attack man anywhere in the league so far,” FLC coach Zane Bilgrav said.

Coach: Zane Bilgrav

Fellow senior Andy Grenhardt may not have the same flashy numbers, but Bilgrav said his presence is just as vital for the Skyhawks.

“He doesn’t quite have the same average (as Johnson), but he’s a great dodger and is able to get us a lot of points per game,” Bilgrav said.

Defensively, juniors Matt Cawley and Jon Bock lead the way for Fort Lewis. Bilgrav calls Cawley his “defensive quarterback,” and added that he’s adept at handling ground balls and creating turnovers. As for Bock, the coach said physicality is the key to his game.

“He’s very fast, very strong,” Bilgrav said. “Great presence down below. Intimidating.”

In the midfield, FLC will rely on the experience of senior Dan Riecks and the power of freshman Fred Waddle.

“(Waddle) brings a lot of power and explosive shots to the midfield,” Bilgrav said. “And senior Dan Riecks brings a lot of experience and maturity to the midfield.”

The Skyhawks, ranked 29th by laxpower.com, will hit the road again after Saturday’s tilt with Regis, heading to Denver to take on Metro State and Creighton on April 9 and 10. The club will then return home for the final three games of the season, beginning on April 16 against Colorado Mines.
