San Diego High School Boys Lacrosse Profile: La Costa Canyon Boys Lacrosse (23-0) Sr. Attacker Timmy Andrews Was The Mavericks “X-Man” In 2010

La Costa Canyon Boys Lacrosse Coach Dallas Hartley credited three-year starter Timmy Andrews’ contributions as the team’s “x-man.” It was a new role for a player who primarily was a goal scorer as a sophomore (34 goals, 5 assists) and junior (41 goals, 8 assists).

La Costa Canyon Boys Lacrosse Sr. attacker #4 Timmy Andrews excelled at the x-man position, putting up 41 goals and 41 assists for a team that outscored the opposition 283-76, including a 55-12 advantage in three playoff games. As a senior, Andrews became the team’s main ball distributor. By season’s end, he had 41 goals and 41 assists for a team that outscored the opposition 283-76, including a 55-12 advantage in three playoff games.

“Timmy changed the way he played for the betterment of the team as a double threat to score or feed. He became our quarterback at the x-position behind the other team’s goal, the player holding the ball and distributing,” said Hartley, who played lacrosse at Sonoma State and has directed the Mavericks varsity for eight seasons, including the 2005 squad that went 24-0.

Described by his coach as a player with change-of-direction quickness, a good finishing touch in tight spaces, solid stick skills and an ability to control the pace of a game, Andrews said he welcomed the x-man role.

“Before, I was more of a finisher, but it wasn’t like my scoring chances went away this year,” Andrews said. “I liked having to make more decisions and have more control over the game. There was more pressure.”

Despite annually playing among the most challenging schedules in the state, the Westwood High girls lacrosse team doesn’t find itself locked in tight games late all that often. But when they do, the Wolverines look right at home.

Something Wellesley knows all too well.

Kelly Rich’s goal with 18 seconds left forced overtime and No. 1 Westwood scored the only three goals of the second overtime session to claim its fourth straight Division 1 South title with an exhilarating 14-12 victory over the No. 3 Raiders on Friday night at Flahive Field.
